Street Cabinet

Hi all. This may have been discussed before but I'm new to the forum

My wife has just rung me at work to tell me Virgin Media are installing a cabinet outside our house. We live in a gable end terrace and the gable end needs repointing, once the cabinet is in we will not be able to repoint that section of wall.

When locations for cabinets are planned is any brain power actually used in deciding where they are going. A couple of meters further down and the cabinet would have been outside my garden wall, no problem. Or why not across the road next to the two open reach cabinets

Shouldn't we have had notification this was happening?

I'm not against the street cabinet, I might even go with Virgin once it's up and running. I just thought a bit of common sense would be used regarding placement of cabinets and the need for properties to have maintenance.

VM will have got permission from the local council to place it where it is most convenient to themselves. The effect on your wall was probably not considered.

I just hope there hasn't been a mix up with the location. Across the road there are as I said two open reach cabinets and a path so wide, it would be the most logical location, also on that side of the road is a Rolls Royce factory and we regularly get post (even company cars) attempted to be delivered at our house because our postcode is often listed online as the Rolls Royce post code. Time will tell if Wingnut Utilities have got it wrong. 😂

VM may have chosen to keep their cabinet separate to avoid getting their underground cable ducts away from the OR ones. And if they are going to cable up the houses on your side they will need a cabinet that side.

Has the cabinet got a sloping top? There was a case on here recently where the cabinet had a top sloping to the back, directing rain onto the wall and causing a damp problem.

My wife had a chat with the engineers installing the cabinet while I was at work. It's been placed outside our house because it is just serving the four small streets in our area. The top slopes away from our wall and the cabinet is about 5” away from our wall. So it can still be pointed with a bit of a struggle. Probably need an SDS drill with a long bit to get the old pointing out, definitely couldn't do it the old way with a hammer and chisel. So I think I needlessly panicked. That will teach me to just stay calm and wait.

Not at all. If I had a call that VM were working outside the house I'd be home like a shot.
