We made it clear to salesman that OK to move from BT broadband to Virgin new fibre. But what are the steps now to cancel BT and also v important keep our landline number & switch it over. The virgin installer ( who made a mess of outside cables still not resolved) said we don't have telephone on our package? That is only reason we switched. Can someone help with a clear step by step please. Thx

The sales person will have promised you anything just to get the order and commission, we see this all the time on here.

You should leave it to VM to request the number transfer and not cancel it with BT or you will lose it. If your order doesn't show a phone line you must chase this urgently with VM Sales.

Alternatively you may be lucky and have a VM person pick this up on here and offer to help.

If you made a request to port your number to Virgin then they should handle the entire process. When moving to a cable provider you are using a completely different network, & not just switching to a different connection at the existing exchange. This type of change is called “cease & reprovide”. Your line MUST remain active with BT throughout the process. DO NOT give notice to BT to cancel your phone service, as this may result in the number port being blocked & you losing your number.

Virgin may give you a temporary number, as your line has to be moved from the BT exchange to Virgin’s, which can take several days.

Thank you and previous poster for both replies. My other question is that with full fibre, do I just plug the phone into the new hub? There is a port for phones. I'm guessing that it then just runs on internet & I don't need any line package from Virgin?

On new connections the phone has to be plugged into the Hub. But it won't work unless your VM contract includes a paid phone service.

All that is happening with the hub based lines is the hub creates a separate IP tunnel between your hub & VMs telephone exchange, instead of the twisted pair from your phone socket doing the same thing at the nearest fibre node in the street. Nothing else changes.

In addition to the information you've been given, it's been my experience that when VM bundles a phone with my broadband and TV, the overall price drops.
