I'm currently on a M200 package and have a hub 3 (I think) I run it in modem mode to feed my mesh system and it all works just fine. I'm coming up for renewal and may push for a faster service as I have city fibre offering 1Gb but I'm sure I read somewhere that the virgin hub 3 only works up to a set speed and virgin 1Gb would need a new hub. Question is if I do need a new hub will I also be able to put this onto modem mode or am I resigned to double NAT?

As you have an existing co-ax cable install, any Hub 3, 4 or 5 will go into modem mode. The only Hub that can't (at the moment) is the Hub 5X and it's for the new XGS-PON fibre service.

you are thinking to stay with VM when city fibre is available - with respect are you mad - they are chalk and cheese - choose your provider with CF with care - i went with No One internet - 2 year contract with no price increase in that 2 years - use my own mesh system and sent back their provided hub for a £50 credit - CS is uk based by email [mainly] - its quick and they are knowledgable
there are lots of providers stay away from the big names who have yearly increases like VM - the smaller ones offer fixed deals - however good your connection is with VM then it will be rubbish compared to CF
install happened on the day - in the time slot arranged - no hassle - no excuses - no BS about cable pulls or council permission - they were happy on my extension flat roof - speeds are spot on

The hub 3 is good for M600, so Gig1 would require either a hub 4 or a hub 5 to be provided (depending on availability). This would be a straight swap but you'll need to reboot your mesh for it to acquire its new WAN IP address.
