Why is it so hard to get a VAT invoice?

I have been trying unsuccessfully to get signed signed up for VAT invoices. I have been told that I am signed up but,  my December invoice has arrived and, surprise surprise, it contains neither a supplier VAT no. or the VAT element identified - so useless for my accountant. 

Not sure where to go now - apart from another supplier. I never had this problem with BT or TalkTalk. The Virgin Media website seems to avoid the whole issue of VAT invoices.
