Moving House

On our wavelength

I am moving house and have a provisional date of 30th August, which I expect to be confirmed in a few days and am considering my TV & broadband options. I have checked the postcode of my new property but on the VM  help>moving home page it says "An engineer will install your services" and "Be online in 7-14 days", however on the VM broadband/postcode-checker page it allows me to select all the services and then takes me to a calendar to select an install date and the lead time is approximately 2 weeks. I also have the option of renewing my contract for £106.59pm instead of the current £133.59pm. So I suppose my questions are:

1) Can I phone to book an engineer to come on a specific date e.g. 2nd September to transfer my services to my new address?

2) Should I go through to renewals and see if I can get a better deal and book an engineer to come to my new property on a specific date, e.g 2nd September?

3) Should I go with EE who have a very similar (discounted) deal priced @ £89.99pm for 24 Months?

Which way would you go?

Hey davidcam, thank you for reaching out and I am sorry to hear this.

You can book your install in for a time that suits you if you need.

We can change this time or date for you.

If you need to ask us any other questions do let us know.

One of my problems is that on the VM moving house page it says that getting online could take 7-14 days. I would need to be online preferably on the day I move in but at a minimum on the first available day after that. My completion date is a Friday and if I was able to be certain that the engineer could come out on the following Monday AND that I could be online on the same day, that would be acceptable. I have been with VM for over 20 years and would like to find an option, both cost and installation wise, that enables me to have continuity of service but if that means changing to a different provider (possibly EE), then I may do just that.

Stop romanticising your 20 years with VM.  There is nothing to be gained for “loyalty”  I was also a long time VM customer but seeing constant “new user” deals undercutting loyal users was the last straw.  Also check the forums around installation dates and broken promises.  Personally I’d save money and go with EE

We would advise normally when you are moving house to give us as much time as possible so we can get it ready for you on moving day.

We wouldn't be able to speed up the install this is because there could be outside work that may need to be done.

We understand moving out is a very stressful time and we would only want what's best for you.

The current owner of the property has informed me that there is broadband cabling and he currently uses BT for this. I would assume that this would make it relatively easy to provide services to the property?

BT/EE are pretty much one and the same. Openreach install the fibre cable and ONT. Once this is done the world is your oyster as far as Broadband suppliers are concerned. The EE router just plugs into the ONT, or indeed pretty much any Router of your choice.

Would take the 7-14 days with a pinch of salt. I booked in my house move three weeks before moving. In VM wisdom they decided to see if the line was working the day before, as my install date was 24th August the day I moved in. Lo and behold the line was dead and it needs a new cabling from the street box. Was then given a new install date of 7th August. They didn't care I needed Broadband to work as I am home based worker. I have had three sets of VM crew come out to try and get the cabling done to no effect. So now they say it will be 20th September new install date, blaming getting permission from council to dig up street. I know for a fact getting permission takes 3 days as the VM guy told me! I have complained but they fob you off and ask you to speak to someone else, who then asks you to speak to someone else. So yer, I would go with EE because VM are not worth the hassle mate. I am heading back to Sky Broadband. VM better not try and screw me for leaving contract early because I think they much be in breach of contract for not providing a service.

Is getting it ready on moving day checking the day before that the line actually works?
