For information where a phone connected via Virgin and suddenly all incoming / outgoing calls appear as engaged. A friend had this problem and the engineer eventually found the cause. It appears there is an electrical component in the box which is house side of the external cable I.e the box in your living room. This component prevents a power surge damaging the router. However this component apparently failed and caused issues with phone signals to and from the phone . On replacing this item the phone worked correctly.

Is this your phone as well or your friends phone only?
Has this been tested with another landline to see if the issue continues on there and not just a singular device issue?
Is the connection on VOIP? If so, has the hub had a reboot / reset?

Thank you- the problem using the phone was on all phones in the premises and people dialling in also got the engaged tone. But as I said the Virgin engineer fixed the problem by replacing an electrical component in the box on the living room wall
