I have the same issue. Been with Virgin for almost 12 months, but I am on the new fibre, using the Hub5x. I assume you might be the standard hub5?

Same issue here mate, XGSPON customer too and suffering from packet loss.
Modem mode is a gimmick for me on the 2gbps package as if im having to use a 1Gb port, no point paying for 2gbps. And its a bit 'flakey' to start with on the 5X in which it shouldn't be.
Bufferbloat is a hard one, as it only normally happens when you max out your connection, which is expected, so setting your speed less than your hub's max attainable downstream/upstream rate *should* keep that at bay. And to be fair, not to defend VM as like yourself i seem to be having a poor time with them also; VM do pump more bandwidth down your line than what you pay for so there is room to do this.
I have CAT6A from the Hub5X (10gbE port) to a Cisco SFP switch on a 10gbE SFP. This gives me a direct 10gbE connection from my switch to the hub, i'd ideally like this to be full fibre to match the rest of my network, but its the best we will get for now... - From there on the Cisco SFP switch i have the port to the router limited to 2gbps up/down, so there's still room for the Hub5X to survive. - That fixed my bufferbloat issues. (You can see my latency times below from ThinkB BQM). - This is why they stay quite flat with no spikes, and i run multiple speed tests a day.
I do genuinely think there is an issue with the Hub5X, but unlike me and you, the generic customer doesn't really see these issues when browsing or watching TV etc, which is what most customers are doing. Its the small percentage of people like us (nerds) who notice this and report it, but there's not enough people reporting it for Virgin to address it as an issue.
I stand with you on this one, and all we can both do is hope that Nexfibre, or VM manage to sort these weird anomalies out.

Hi Jaye, thanks for this response. It's much appreciated. I am glad I am not the only one. I was just looking at my BQM today and noticed a large outage at 2am and packet loss in the middle of the night. When i was asleep. The one thing i have noticed is playing any online game being cabled directly into the router via the 10GB port makes a big difference. But "big" being the fact I get allot less jitter and packet loss from CS, BF etc. Even sat next to the router with my laptop on wireless, getting 500mbps on wifi, the issue is still more persistent. Has to be wifi packet optimisation or its just got a cheap receiver and sender unit which is highly likely. For now i have just moved my gaming setup into the room with the router and hardwired, but I never had this issue with BT router or my Linksys Velop setup. Could play pretty much all games on wireless without any issue. Slightly higher MS, but hardly any jitter or packet loss. Anyways, I give up for now. Ill live with it for now and either wait for the firmware update. Lost the will to faff around with getting a new router and putting it into modem mode.

Hi Noggy,
Not sure what method you are using, but under the firewall section there is an option you can disable that may help the online gaming experience. Once i get home i will have a look at which of the 4 options it is, i cant remember off the top of my head.
It really depends on the lengths you want to go to, the only way around this i've found is to purchase a WAS-110 XGSPON ONU SFP+ stick and use the 8311 custom firmware where you can input your routers PON address and S/N so that you get a connection. The SFP is not cheap, but it gets rid of the HUB5X completely. You need a SC/APC to LC/APC adapter though.
There is a few people running this setup now, try at your own risk! - I'm yet to get this working, my incoming light level from the street is around -25dBm which is not great, so VM need to address that first before i can think about swapping out the Hub5X.
