New 1GB FTTP with strange regular latency spikes, is it normal?

Hi folks, I got my new 1gb FTTP installed the other day, VM is new in my area, the connection is maybe 3 days old at this point.

I ran some line tests for latency and jitter, as I will be using the line for gaming, straight away I noticed the latency wasn't as good as my VDSL BT, it was okay but definitely slower latency wise to the same servers.

here is the BQM, I wonder if with the connection being new that this is some sort of testing phase?

It could be coincidental definitely. I think these spikes could be just that ICMP responses are delayed because of something else, not necessarily contention which noticeably impacts the connection.

Seems my outages have stopped now, these peaks still the same though, are they for you? Also based on your BQM, my ping is lower on average but looks more variable. Your graph is tighter where mine is peaking more. Might just be me using it more though?

Good Morning @Lordcast0r, thanks for your post on our Community Forums, and a very warm welcome to you!

Sorry to hear of the connection issues, experienced so early in your customer journey with Virgin Media.

Can you please provide us with an update on how the services are currently performing for us?

Further BQM graphs are welcome

Thanks,

David_Bn

Just chiming in, not lord but we have been set up at different times in different areas with newly installed XGS PON. We both have hourly spikes where our routers response to ICMP requests are delayed. His graph is cleaner than mine, but the frequency is identical. Could it be testing from the VM side for new XGS PON installations?

I'm also just chiming in here with an update on my BQM.

@Richie90 I'm still not noticing any obvious pausing/stuttering during video calls or anything else which falls inline with those spikes in latency - but that can still just be a coincidence.

That being said, last night I had a bunch of packet loss, and now this morning the spikes have stopped for a period of time (though the minimum latency still has the sawtooth pattern to it!)

I have setup my BQM again and i will post an update in 24hrs time, However I do not imagine there to be any difference, I still see the ping jump around like the sawtooth pattern while I'm running latency tests on gaming servers

I was really hoping this FTTP would come with an amazing low latency and ping for gaming, heck its advertised as great for gaming

haha Virgin can't even get FTTP right without some latency issues..
Anyone that has BT FTTP available I suggest you move.

Its simple really VM stop DoS your users in checking their speed when it hits your hub rate limit.

Looks like it might actually be impacting my ping too. I jump from 14-17ms pinging google.co.uk, to about 100 for 10 pings or so.. So it's likely not impacting applications where ping doesn't matter so much or you have a buffer.

Can someone from VM tell us what this is, being XGS PON users in different areas are seeing this and it's exactly hourly?

Going to check the BQM when it updates enough but 19:15-19:17 or so. I was in VOIP and it started to robot, I quickly opened a ping to google.co.uk and got 2 timeouts. I do think this testing or whatever it is, is having an adverse impact on performance. It's just so intermittent, you have to have someone speaking or be using something very sensitive to delay/latency running at that exact moment.
