connection to server smtp virginmedia.com timed out using Thunderbird

I am using Thunderbird to access my virgin.net email and live out in the "boonies" with a relatively slow internet access speed.  I am getting "connection to server smtp virginmedia.com timed out".

How can this be resolved ... urgently!

Consider opening a Command Shell in Windows or Terminal app elsewhere and executing the following curl command:

curl -v smtps://smtp.virginmedia.com

Does it successfully connect to the SMTP server? For example, a successfully connection ends with:

It worked later on in the day so I guess it was their server.
