Thunderbird client configuration

Hello

I'm trying to set up Thunderbird to access my Virgin Email account, which is actually an old blueyonder account.

I have followed the pop3 instructions from https://www.virginmedia.com/help/broadband/manage-email-account.

I am using the same email password I use to access my email via the Virgin web site.

I have attached an image of the settings I'm using.

I have run a curl command that was advised to another user, the result was

* Host smtp.virginmedia.com:465 was resolved.
* IPv6: (none)
* IPv4: 84.116.6.19
*   Trying 84.116.6.19:465...
* schannel: disabled automatic use of client certificate
* schannel: next InitializeSecurityContext failed: CRYPT_E_NO_REVOCATION_CHECK (0x80092012) - The revocation function was unable to check revocation for the certificate.
* closing connection #0
curl: (35) schannel: next InitializeSecurityContext failed: CRYPT_E_NO_REVOCATION_CHECK (0x80092012) - The revocation function was unable to check revocation for the certificate.

Can anyone help?

Thank you

  • How to set an app password to use an email app

    To set up Virgin Media email on an android or iPhone email app, you need to create a separate app password through Account settings on the My Virgin Media app.

    To get the password, follow these steps:

    Sign in to My Virgin Media on the app

    Go to Account settings, then Account details.

    Under Virgin Media Mail, tap Manage next to Manage your Virgin Media Mail app password.

    Under Virgin Media Mail app password, tap Generate new App password and follow the instructions.

    A new secure app password will be generated for you, you can use it in all apps that access your Virgin Media mail address. If you create a new app password, you’ll need to update all your existing apps with the new password.

    Your separate app password will help make things more secure as IMAP and POP don’t use extra protection like Multi Factor Authentication.

    Remember that this password is separate from your sign in details for My Virgin Media (or any Virgin Media apps). So, if you need to check your Virgin Media Mail emails through My Virgin Media or at mail.virginmedia.com, you'll still use your My Virgin Media password.

      Thank you for the reply.

      I have accessed Thunderbird for the first time since posting my question.

      The error message is no longer displayed when I tried retrieving messages I was asked to provide my password.

      Inputting the password that was valid prior to these problems was rejected.

      I followed the advice you gave and created a new app password and was then able to retrieve incoming emails.

      The IMPORTANT message for anyone reading this is that a desktop client Thunderbird / Outlook etc requires an app password, 'app' in this instance does NOT just apply to mobile phones.

      Although you can create this 'app password' using the My Virgin App, on your mobile, you can also do it via this link which is what I used.

      https://www.virginmedia.com/identity/forgotten-details/password

      Why these problems occurred I do not know. What I am sure of is that failure was not because I attempted to or requested a change to that password.

      Regards

        Yes, to VM "app" means anything other than using My VM / Webmail.  It was all done in the name of security.  All existing users now have to have a 3rd party email address,  and new users have not been given a mailbox for about 3 years now.  Once you leave, your mailbox will be purged after 90 days.  Eventually there will be a point there will be no more mailboxes on the VM server.  Best to move your mail to a non ISP tied in mailbox sooner, rather than later.

    The validity of Virgin Media's IMAP. POP3, and SMTP server certificates cannot be verified, i.e. their revocation status cannot be determined ― Thunderbird is correctly failing to establish a secure connection with the server.

    Virgin Media (ModTeam) need to look at why from your network connection their certificate's revocation status cannot be checked. In the meantime consider either:

    • waiting for the issue to resolve itself before trying to setup the the email account
    • temporarily deselect the highlighted option below before setting the account up:

      NB: make sure to reselect the option once the revocation status issue is resolved

      I returned to Thunderbird earlier today, no error messages were displayed & after creating a new app password I was able to access my email account
