Transfer virgin.net emails to a gmail account/download local copy of all emails

Hi,

I've had a virgin.net email account for 20+ years and have received an email this week about the impending closure of my account. This is my sole email so it it crucial I retain access to my emails.

My daughter has attempted importing my virgin.net account onto a gmail account she's made using gmail's import function and keeps receiving an error message saying google couldn't validate this combination of information. According to the guide she found, gmail should import the inbox, contacts and forward any new emails for 30 days which would be ideal.

I've entered the following:

POP username:
myemail

POP server:
mail.virgin.net PORT: 110 SSL: disabled

(which are the settings google preloads) Is that correct?

I've also tried this process with Mozilla Thunderbird, which is displaying a similar error: "unable to log in at server. probably wrong configuration, username or password" despite it showing as the configuration is available from the email provider.

Is this because the service is @virginmedia.com opposed to @virgin.net these days? Will it be possible to import the entirety of my emails in this fashion? If I can't do it this way, is there a way to download a local copy of my account with a view to import it?

Thanks,

Mike

and the section 'Connecting your Email to a Client App' on the correct server settings. Hopefully you don't run into issues with VM's app password requirements.

If you are moving from one provider to another, I'd suggest it is a bit pointless simply transferring the archived contents of a 20+ year mailbox to the new provider as most of the info will be archive and will just use up storage space from your new mailbox. It is never a good idea to use a mailbox as an online data store.

Contacts and any current/pending correspondence would, however, be useful to transfer.

Thanks for the reminder about the Client App function, I have used that before and having now entered that password, gmail and thunderbird have logged in! 🙂

I'll wait until they import and eventually keep just the thunderbird local copy as my archive. Just couldn't face sorting through two decades of emails just yet haha
