Check the server settings in Thunderbird (accessed as below)

and match these to VM's required server settings

Use the full VM email address and the app password generated from when your wife logs into her own 'My VM'
VM's latest change has been to require secure authentication on the outbound server which may need enabling if she can receive but not send
