I think my email has been compromised. HELP

I think someone external has my email  password. I am continuing using an old virginmedia email account even though I have left virginmedia 2 years ago which still works as normal.

Over the past 2 weeks, I am getting requests to change my password on media platforms such as Vinted and Linkedin and SHOP. I have reported these as they have sucessfully changed my password on a couple of occassions. They can only do this if they had access to my email for the security code to confirm the case.

My first port of call would be to change my email password, however when i have tried to login to VM email here it does not recognise my username or password yet it still allows me to access it via the Outlook and phone app.

Please can someone advise me what to do next, I just dont want to end up on a TV show

As you are no longer a Virginmedia customer, that email account is liable to be closed down at any time. But if it's being misused you should ask for it to be closed down right away. You can't do this yourself, but you wait here for a VM staff member to pick this up they can do it for you.

  • thanks, I actually have opened an alternative email account with a generic provider with a new password so i'm in the proccess of migrating all my accounts over.  I think closing down the account is the way to go to as ive had it for many years, im surprised its still working.

        Thanks Matt, appreciate the reply.

As per DM reply can you provide a business email address I can respond to you on rather than passing lots of personal information to you via PM on a forum.

  • Hi all,

I just though i would give you a quick update since posting I am getting further emails from a hacker demanding bitcoin payments, after doing a bit of digging over this forum, it looks like  a common problem, obviously I have not responded!. One of the team had emailed me Alex, whom was arranging to get my account closed down and was very helpful, I dont know if this person is on their day off work but I would be grateful if someone from the team could send me a PM, as I need to just ask to something directly. thanks

I can see you are in PM with my colleague and she is looking into this, please don't worry she will reach out when she can do. Cheers

  • Hi  This is happening to me.  I need my Virgin email shut down so these people stop using it.

    Please can someone help, thanks!

  • It is terrifying knowing someone else is using your accounts so i can sympathise.  As far as im aware, the advice Ive been told would be to change all of your email address for any accounts you have asap, then change all passwords if your using the same password on your email.  If you can do this early as possible, it will create a lot less work later on. I knew a few weeks ago something was wrong as I was getting verification codes to my email and phone and password reset emails. Then my linkedin account was hacked but i could not change my password as the culprit had also added 2 step verification on my account im assuming with his mobile number, it was a lot of hassle contacting different sites support and getting my account back but I would advise you do the above asap.
