Closing ntlworld Email address

Good afternoon, I hope someone can help me. I closed my virgin media account last year due to security issues and was advised that my email address would cease to work 30 days after the account was closed, however it is still working and all I keep getting is spam emails. Is it possible for the email address to be deleted?
