I think the £89 is for Office 365 and includes 1TB Cloud storage. Thunderbird is still widely used as well. There is an email client with Windows but I’ve never used it.

I think the 365 price hike has come about because MS is now ramming Copilot down the throats of 365 subscribers as part of the bundle at additional cost.
IIRC at the end of last year it used to be possible to revert back to a previous 365 package/price minus Copilot by starting the process to cancel the subscription at which point cheaper previous packages were offered, minus Copilot.
However, it now looks as if MS may have closed off that avenue and any reduced cost packages do not seem to have the Outlook desktop app included.
I have never used Thunderbird but I did install it on an Android phone recently for the purposes of some testing and I was quite impressed with the phone app version of it. It was easy to set up and worked reliably.

"used Thunderbird pre covid but not sure if its as rela=iable as it was"
I have used Thunderbird with Windows 11 for quite a while probably a couple of years, and I cannot remember the last time I had a problem.
My only slight issue is that, to me, the search function in the latest version does not seem as good as in previous versions.

Thunderbird used here for many accounts on several Windows machines and one Apple laptop. Never had a problem with it. Didn't like the Android version though.

Was your Android experience of TB recent or in the past? I think it had some sort of a re-release last year or merger(?) with K9 mail.

Worth saying where you want to check your emails. There is a free version of Outlook in Windows 11 and available on Android phones at least, and it can also be used through a browser. No need to buy Office 365 if you don't want Excel, Word and Powerpoint plus the storage.
As others have said, Thunderbird is an option, and it is being updated regularly. Alternatively, if it is on a PC, then it is straight forward to check emails on the Virgin website and no need to use something like Outlook or Thunderbird.
On mobile I use Typeapp on my Android phone for 4 Virgin email addresses, and that works fine.
