Intermittent Emails

Morning Guys,

Can I also say that since the outage was fixed last Wednesday with regards to those people using ntlworld accounts, the arrival of emails iny Webmail has been VERY hit and miss. Some emails that we used to regularly receive before the outage we no longer get,and we go sometimes four or five hours without any emails at all, which is VERY unusual. We estimate that as it stands we like other members in here, are currently only receiving half of our emails that were receiving, prior to that outage being fixed. Have tried sending ourselves tester emails from other accounts to our ntlworld address, and that's fine. But we are 100% definitely not receiving as many emails as what we should be,the se as other people have been reporting. Hopefully something will be done,to enable all of our emails to arrive,as they should be.

Unfortunately, the only way you will resolve all the problems of unreliability with VM email is to stop using VM email.

I could have written this post myself! Since the outage I'm the same, I get the occasional dribble of emails but ones that I get regularly no longer come through. I'm so fed up with VM.

“Have tried sending ourselves tester emails from other accounts to our ntlworld address, and that's fine.”

Taken together, those two statements may be pointers to what is happening.

If those missing emails are from organisations that send you regular updates, newsletters etc on a daily or more frequent basis and you are on a mailing list then it may not be VM that is preventing those emails from  getting through.

Most organisations use a software package to manage sending those emails. As part of their remit, those email packages have measures in place to stop their client (the organisation sending the emails) from getting flagged as a spammer.

That includes actioning requests from people asking to be removed from the organisation’s distribution list but they also monitor any email rejections that come back to the organisation.

In either case, the sender’s email address is added to  what is referred to as a “deny list” list sometimes called a “suppression list” and once on that list  the email software stops trying to deliver to that email address.

Mailchimp are one of the major email software providers    https://mailchimp.com/developer/transactional/docs/reputation-rejections/#rejected-emails

and here’s a page from Mailchimp’s website dealing with that aspect of their software:

With the ntlworld emails being rejected for basically a 24 hour period (or maybe more) it may well be that any ntlworld.com addresses are now being suppressed by the organsitions whose emails are now going missing. In which case the emails are being blocked at the sender's end not by VM.

My advice would be to contact the senders whose emails are going missing and explain it to them.

Sadly, I think you will find that in many cases the customer support staff will be totally unaware that their email software has a “deny list” or “suppression list”.  🙁

Just to complicate matters, the deny/suppression list only applies to automated emails sent by the email software package. Emails sent to you by the staff themselves using their company email account will still get through – that’s because they are not being sent through the Mailchimp (or equivalent) software.

I do know this can be an issue because I helped at a charity for some time and used the MailChimp software. It was a regular occurrence for the charity’s supporters and volunteers to moan that that they had stopped getting their regular newsletters. It was always down to their email address getting onto the Mailchimp suppression list. 😉

Hi, Thank you for your reply.  This can't be the case with my problem though as my family's emails aren't coming through either, yet they don't receive any bounceback replies.  A couple of other emails that I knew I should have received were from the local council, I phoned to explain what was happening and gave them my gmail address, they sent two emails and they arrived my end!

"gave them my gmail address, they sent two emails and they arrived my end!"

I think that's telling you it's time for you to move all your contacts over to using your Gmail account. 😉

Adduxi and goslow gave advice along those lines in their replies to the original poster who started this thread and they were not wrong.

VM stopped issuing new email accounts 3 years ago and the long term future of the whole VM email service is unclear.

VM email users have been reporting similar issues to what you are seeing for a long time - that goes back long before the last debacle with the ntlworld domain.

Just for completeness, there are a lot of alternatives to Gmail of course - some of them are listed here

I also noticed a reduction in emails received to my ntlworld.com email over the last week or so, I thought it was unusual but was not aware of the outage. I no longer use this as my main email having switched to gmail and others. If newsletters are not getting through consider switching them to other emails and subscribing again.

Regarding the spam emails I am pleased if they are not received. If the email is primary then it can not be deleted, but can be used as a throw away email to avoid using your main email which could be gmail for example.  Use another email  provider to send a test email to check if is receiving.
