Email suddenly not working

Hi, I was in the middle of a conversation with my sister via my ntlworld address which I've had forever (and now accessed via google mail), and suddenly all my emails disappeared and I got a blank page with 'forbidden' in the top left corner. I thought ok, it's my phone playing up, tried logging in again but I got forbidden again. So I went to my computer which automatically loads virgin email, and again all I got was 'forbidden'. I can't understand how it was working one minute and then not the next. Can anyone help please? My whole life is in that email...!

It's always risky to use an email service as an online filing cabinet, and VM have always said thst you should keep your own copies. You're not the first to have suffered the loss of data like this.

Hopefully a VM person will pick this up and can offer to retrieve your email, but you should prepare for the worst.

Hmm. It's not looking good I'm afraid. Something may have gone wrong when your contract changed.

I hope VM can sort this for you, but have you not kept offline copies of your emails?

No I haven't got any copies :( And everything is in there from shopping, to banking etc etc. I would be so surprised if they did this to me without warning though. I pay quite a lot a month for services :(

You may have a problem with your VM mailbox or it may just be another problem in the long list of never-ending problems with VM email.

Here is a link from a past topic about the 'forbidden' web page message

        https://community.virginmedia.com/discussions/email/403-forbidden-on-webmail-again/5342528/replies/5467926

If you can get into 'My Virgin Media' for your mailbox you should be able to try the password reset.

I believe you have to also generate an app password (even if you do not need to use one with an email client) and I have also read on other password reset topics that leaving a period of time after the reset is important before trying to regain access with the new password. The link above states an hour. I have seen other posts mention 30 minutes.

This is all just more random nonsense with the VM email service. If/when you do regain access you should make a backup of the contents of your mailbox. Mailstore Home is free and gets regular mentions on here.

After that, do yourself a favour and start the process of moving all of your online services away from VM email and onto a third party, non-ISP service which should bypass all of the never-ending problems with VM email.

My gmail address still works for getting me into virgin media to see bills etc. Just not email any more.

Yes I can only get into virgin email via gmail - i.e. my gmail address is my username, but my gmail account still works as I just tested it.

But getting into virgin via gmail isn't working now.

I choose the services/contract and pay all the bills.  So yes, I am definitely primary.

It's a year ago today that I moved here, but although they changed my account number, I have been with them for many, many years.

Yes I see bills and package info etc. I deal with all of that.

Earlier you said "Some months ago they told me I had to access my virgin email via google mail and that has been working fine for some time."

Has that stopped working as well? VM email via Gmail?

It sounds from your description that you're using email apps. Have you tried logging on to web mail?

Some months ago they told me I had to access my virgin email via google mail and that has been working fine for some time. I checked my google mail and that account is working ok, although it has hardly anything in it as I never use it.

Is the ntlworld mailbox in question part of the primary account (where you can see bills, package info etc.) or is it what was termed a secondary mailbox?

No I don't use apps, I go on safari or firefox or edge.

Yes I do, and I've been with virgin for many years.
