Email Problem

Hi

I have an ntlworld email account from over a decade ago that still works fine. I also added a secondary account for my partner for my partner, which also works fine for her on her PC via Thunderbird, which gets emails from her NTLworld addy and an Outlook addy. All's fine with the exception that if I, or she, attempt to log into her email account on-line via Firefox it gets to the point of asking for her email addy (which we give as the NTLWorld one - we've also tried her Outlook one) and then it asks for her password and then it just stops at that point. It doesn't say the password or email addy are incorrect it just stops and doesn't do anything.

If I log into my email it then does go onto allowing access to the stored emails and to change the settings. But her one just stops at the password request with no explanation as to what it's doing. This is very frustrating as we'd like to change the password that was foist upon us when all the extra security malarkey was added last year, but we can't gain any sort of access to her email settings now.

  • Never mind, managed to get into her MVM account by resetting her password and re-logging in, all without upsetting her NTLWorld email account and password. We never did have a MVM account in her name so how we could reset something that didn't exist I don't know. Oh, and I did have to switch off all security to do it though, such as Ghostery, Ad-Block and MalwareBytes before it would let me reset to password. What a mockery of so-called 'increased security'. Being a cynic at heart I can't help but believe that all this an attempt by Virgin to totally abandon having to support any sort of emailing (to go with their very expensive broadband) and force users to go elsewhere for their emailing needs. Why they don't just he honest and say they don't want to support email any more and just be done with it I can't imagine. I guess they would if they could but regulators won't let them, so they go the 'we'll make the process as obnoxious as possible and they'll leave of their own accord' route.

we'd like to change the password that was foist upon us when all the extra security malarkey was added last year,

You cannot change the email password by logging into the email account itself. To do that you need to log into the "My Virgin Media Account" (MVM)  for that email address.

If by "extra security malarkey " you mean that you have changed the username of the account to a non VM email address (presumably an Outlook.com address as you mention in your post) .then you need to sign into the MVM

    https://www.virginmedia.com/my-virgin-media

with that non VM email address and the current VM email account password.

Once you are in the MVM account, select Account Settings > Select the Virgin Media Mail Settings option

VM will then send an email to your non VM email account and you will need to enter the verification code into the MVM screen.

Then scroll down to the App Password section and click the Generate New App Password button and follow the instructions.

Then use that new  App password supplied by VM in email settings in Outlook.

Tried every permutation ie the outlook email addy with the present ntlworld pass (and also the outlook pass), and also even tried the ntlworld addy with the ntlworld pass or the outlook pass. It either does absolutely nothing, without any explanation, or it tells me that email or password is incorrect - which is the same email and password I've just cut and pasted out of Thunderbird, which is working just fine in sending and receiving emails! None of the above gets me into the settings for the NTLworld email which is all I'm trying to do.

As I said in my post, to get to the settings of the affected Ntlworld email account you need to access the My Virgin Media account for that email address.

Have you tried signing into that MVM account from this address (sorry the forum is not currently allowing clickable links to be posted)

with your wife's non VM email address and the current VM email account password?

If you can do that then generating a new mail app password may resolve the problem.

Have I tried signing into the MVM account? Yes, it's what I've been trying all along.

Now when you say "that" email address, are you talking about my email (the main account) or her email, the secondary account?

. It either does absolutely nothing, without any explanation, or it tells me that email or password is incorrect - which is the same email and password I've just cut and pasted out of Thunderbird, which is working just fine in sending and receiving emails!

Each VM email address has its own My Virgin Media account and two username/password combinations.

To log into the MyVM account for your wife's address you need to use the third party email address for her Ntlworld address together with the Ntlworld password.  The same combination is used to access the address in VM webmail.

To access the account via an email app use the Ntlworld email address as the username together with the generated app password which has four parts each delineated with a -.

So the Thunderbird password is not the one to use for the MyVM account.

Yeah except I've repeatedly tried to log into MVM account using her outlook addy and then using her NTLWorld password (which these days is the four part app password Virgin gave us last year) and it just comes back with "Incorrect Email or Password" without actually pointing out which one it doesn't like. Either way it's not letting us into the account details. If you're saying the NTLWorld password (the four part hyphen one) is not the same thing as the MVM account password then how do I go about gaining an MVM password if it won't let me into the account to make one?

then using her NTLWorld password (which these days is the four part app password Virgin gave us last year)

Well there is the problem.  The four part app password is only for use with third party email apps/clients.  For MyVM access the password is the account password.  If you don't have a record of it then you will need to follow the Forgotten password route.

Well it seems that she's never had a "My Virgin Media" account, hers was only created as a sub address of mine. It says I have created a secondary addy but it's her Outlook one so I guess we have to go into her access attempt and go to the register a new MVA account and password, but I don't want to do anything to mess with her Thunderbird NTLWorld email that's working fine. Could someone advise on how best to do this please.
