Email login - reset password

 If it seems to be  so easy for hackers to get access to M&S/Co op accounts why is it so very difficult to reset Virgin email sign in details.After nearly an hour yesterday talking to an customer adviser and getting nowhere I gave up.

    Each VM mailbox now has to be administered through its own 'My Virgin Media' login.

    While resetting a password you may also have to provide VM with a third party email address.

    What have you tried so far and what was the outcome (in regard to what happens when you try to reset the password, error messages showing etc.)?

  • I gave a 3rd party email but did not seem to work

    Contacted again only to be told that my wife's email address did not exist on my account.Told the agent that this email address has been in constant use for 25 years and that it was onscreen now with emails up to the time it crashed.Eventually I got a temporary password which worked. My point is that it is fairly easy and straight forward to change passwords with most companies so why is so difficult with Virgin

    VM's email system has been through may changes over the years. The present arrangement, of having to provide a third party email address, is a mashup of fixes to try to deal with past security weaknesses. Like any bolt-on solution it can be cumbersome and unintuitive to use.

    VM's email service has been beset with endless faults, and problems with reliability, as evidenced by the never-ending topics of complaint on this forum.

    From 2022 VM stopped issuing email addresses to new customers and existing customers cannot create new email addresses. VM is also running an active programme of closing down mailboxes, not linked to an active VM broadband subscription, wherever it can. Regulars on here have frequently speculated that the future of VM email may not be long-lived (although VM has made no statement of intent regarding VM email).

    If you have now reset your password, and have set up a third party email address, it would be a good investment of time to start moving all of your online services and contacts over to the new third party email address. This will free you, in the long term, from having to deal with the many failings of VM email.

    @goslow has given sound advice.

    Anyone still clinging to those old email addresses should move their contacts to a safer account with another provider while they still can.

    And always keep an offline backup of important data.
