Email forwarding not working

Hi, I have set up forwarding on my VM email account via webmail. I have the 'auto forwarding is active', the forward to address is in it's correct place, but most emails aren't being pushed through. A couple have, but for instance, I have 10 in my VM inbox, none of which have been forwarded. I can understand that a couple may be picked up by spam filters (even though they're not). They are not in any folder in the receiving email.

Not sure whether the issue is with VM forwarding the emails, or the receiving provider not getting them.

Any way to check?

Many thanks, John

  • Consider temporarily disabling the auto-forward and instead using the following filter rule to provide a visual indicator of forwarding, i.e. if its flag is set in webmail then the rule ran against it:

        Hi Robert,

The assistance from both forum members have enabled me to achieve my desired outcome.

        Many thanks to all,

        John

  • Many thanks for the response.

I have configured the rule, and will see how it goes. Ironically, my email notification about a response ended up in my VM webmail Spam folder 😂

Yes, that's been a problem for a while. It seems that Khoros, who provide the Forum software for VM, made some recent changes which result in emails from the forum being flagged by VM (and other email providers) as spam, It would seem that VM have taken this up with Khoros.

Hi coenoby, thanks for the heads up. Forwarding still not working properly. I access 2 email accounts on webmail, my old blueyonder and newer VM emails. I'm not sure if the rule suggested would pick up emails coming into webmail for the 2 email addresses?

One other thing which came to mind - I can also access my emails via Outlook and Android, and not sure if they are read there before reading in email, then it won't process it unless it was read first in webmail. It would appear that the Blueyonder emails are being forwarded, but not any to my VM email address. I know that forwarding works fine from another non VM email account and is received successfully by the new email client.

        Thanks, John

  • Many thanks again for the support; much appreciated. It is mainly the BY email that I want forwarding. This email receives a lot of spam, and I want it forwarded to my new email client which has the ability to report phishing without using MxToolbox etc.

Thanks also for confirmation that it doesn't matter whether the email has been opened elsewhere before being forwarded.

I also have set up an auto forward of my vm email and also keep a copy on the server as well.

Most of my VM emails on ntlworld.com do forward correctly to a gmail.com email account, however some emails do not get forwarded and I think this may be the ones that are considered to be spam, although I do set my spam to go to the inbox.

So if an email has harmful content it is blocked either by virgin or google and does not forward, but some spam does get through to the gmail.com spam folder. It is specific emails that are blocked for some reason so the forwarding is not 100% reliable, and I can now identify usually which ones will fail, as the emails are ones that have dangerous content within or malware etc even though they have been delivered to the VM email inbox.

Update- I have now removed my auto forward to gmail as the ntlworld.com email is no longer my main email address as it gets too much spam email.

One one occasion a year or so back,  I did have a problem with forwarding from virgin email to another email gmail or outlook, and because I had set up a few forwards on secondary emails then  virgin security locked all my emails blocking access as they thought it was suspicious activity. In some cases if spam email are forwarded VM may view that as dangerous to their system.

I am being careful as VM have been switching My IP address recently and I ended up with a wrong location twice but that was a different issue caused by using a VPN now solved

I no longer use my virgin email much, although mine  still exists at the moment provided you are a customer, I use alternative emails and login to VM using a Microsoft outlook.com email now and would advise that having alterative emails is wise and can switch over to them if needed.
