Email demanding payments or else

Hello,

I received an email a few days ago saying that that had information on me etc and demanding payment in bitcoin.

I ignored it but , this morning received a similar one but this one had apparently been sent from my own email address. Obviously not making any payment but, does anyone have any advices?

Thanks. Steve

  • I had something similar, and more worryingly the email quoted my password. I would like to know how to change this but it doesn't seem all that easy.

Obviously you must ignore the demand, but you need to ask VM to close down that email address ASAP.  A VM person will pick this up if you wait.

If you have been unwise enough to use the same password on other accounts, you must get those changed.

This form of threatening communication is a common tactic used by miscreants to extort victims. To improve the likelihood of success the miscreant will deploy a  psychological ruse by including information that they have obtained elsewhere and / or forges your email address as the sender to imply truth and/or risk from other things mentioned in the communication. For example, the miscreant may quote an old or current password that the victims uses or used to use.
