The Terms and Conditions of VM's Broadband contract specify that 90 days after the contract is closed VM will delete all email accounts linked to that broadband account.
In realty VM are slow with their housekeeping so they have probably only just caught up with the fact that your broadband account was closed a year ago. Unfortunately, experience from other forum posters in your situation shows that VM do not give any warning before they delete an email account which explains why it has come as a surprise to you.
One of the Forum Team (VM staff who support this forum) will contact you via this forum thread. However, since you are no longer a VM broadband customer I don't think they are going to be able to help you but see what they say.

Thank you for reaching out to us in our community and welcome back, sorry to shear you go longer have access to your Email after leaving us 1 year ago, as advised when you leave anytime general after 90 days the Email will be removed, we appreciate this doesn't always happen so quick like in your case, although if deleted there isn't anything we can do I will however be more than happy to take a look for you.
