If you don't already have a 3rd party (non Virgin Media) email account then you will have to set one up.
Here are some to consider https://www.lifewire.com/best-free-email-accounts
Once you have opened one you can then retrace the steps you have taken so far and then complete the password reset process and generate a mail app password for your VM email account.
"I can put my emails onto outlook and if in pop3 format as far as i understand, they will remain in outlook even when virgin media delete my account and it is no longer visible online"
By "Outlook" do you mean Microsoft Outlook" the email client / app that allows you to manage a number of different email accounts or an Outlook.com email account?
I think you are referring to Outlook (or "New Outlook") the email client / app. If so, then sorry, but there are a couple of issues with what you have said there.
- POP3 will only download the emails from the Inbox in your VM email account - not the VM emails you have sent. To pickup all the emails from your VM email account (Sent folder, Inbox and any personal email folders you have set up) you will need to use IMAP settings in the Outlook client.
- BUT, and it's a big BUT, you cannot rely on the emails you download by IMAP remaining in the Outlook client once the VM email account itself is closed. They could potentially disappear at any time.
The safest way to download and save the emails from your Virgin email account is to use email archive software such as this: https://www.mailstore.com/en/products/mailstore-home/ but other software is available. There is also an option to download emails as .eml files directly from your VM webmail account but it's a bit long winded.
