Closing a virgin.net e-mail

Dear Virgin Media,

I have an old virgin.net email account that I no longer have access to and would like to close it permanently please.

I was locked out of it in December last year and I have tried support online and telephone to try and resolve but without success.  In the end I asked if it could just be deleted as I cannot access it anyway, but it still appears to exist.

Please could you assist me in closing the email account please to reduce spam and potential spoofing.
