Archiving emails to Mailstore

I had a lot of trouble being able to see all my email accounts after the VirginO2ID came in. That is now sorted after several long and stressful phone calls to customer services yesterday.

However, there have been several times now when I have lost access to my emails and I would like to export them out of Virgin so that I don't lose my email history again. I saw a previous discussion that recommended Mailstore, which I have downloaded.

However, I cannot get it to work as it does not accept my current password, or any previous passwords that I can remember.

Every time I get "Authentication failed. Check your username and password. The server returned Authentication failed (NO)"

Has anyone else had this issue, and do you have a tips for resolving it?

Thank you

Have you setup the four word app password for your mailbox?  It’s in the form word-word-word-word.

  • I was given a 5 word "recovery code " in that format when I set up the VirginO2ID. To be honest, I didn't know what that was for. Never seen a 4 word code.

That is for recovering your VMO2ID account if you forget all your details.  Keep it safe, you never know, you might need it ...

  • Now I have got the instructions and I think I understand them, but now can't log in. Constantly getting "Sorry, we can't sign you in just now etc..."

Even when I did sign in, I got that message when I tried to go into account settings. Slowly losing the will...

Try using an Incognito brower window in Chrome, or an InPrivate window in Edge?  Are you saying you can't even log into your My VM account?

  • I was getting the attached message every time I tried to log in to Virgin, even when I left it for a few hours.

I was in Edge. I switched to Chrome and it's working. Mailstore currently archiving my emails - thank you! To be honest, I hardly ever use my Virgin email now, but I wanted to save the history, as that is a record of so many things!

  • Mailstore has successfully archived one of my email accounts. I'll do the rest when I have tidied them up a bit. It's fully searchable, which is what I will probably use it for. Thank you for all your help.

My husband made a very valid point - what happens if Mailstore goes out of business? The files on my computer are not readable by anything else. It may seem a bit pedantic, but lots of apps come and go.

It's a fair point but the same argument could be made for anything that is stored in an electronic format. How long will any form of electronic archives/storage last into the future?

If there are any documents in your email store that have such a very high level of importance they need to be kept indefinitely, they should not be stored solely in an email archive. You should make hard copies or extract documents/messages into another electronic format and back those up as part of a regular backup routine.

It cannot be stressed too firmly that email is simply a postal system. It is NOT a permanent online filing cabinet and should not be relied upon to keep documents safe, as many users have found to their cost.

Keep a copy of the MailStore application with your other application backups, i.e. in the unlikely event MailStore goes out of business you still have the application to install and use.

  • That's very true, and important attachments will have been downloaded and saved - on more than 1 device!

  • It's also a bit irritating that there is nothing in any of my email accounts before 2013. I've had an ntlworld email since at least 2004. I know nothing that old is of much importance now, but it's sometimes to interesting to search for those little memories - when did I do that, where did I stay in France in 2010 etc etc.
