And if you have been careless enough to use the same password on other sites, change them too.

  • Same thing happened to me a few years ago, change your password ASAP as per the users advice.

If they really had the photo's or access, they would have done something about it before emailing you. (got to love 2 factor authentication these days.)

I also replied to the their email afterwards stating to "bring it on". Never heard or received anything from them since.

jackydog If the email address is no longer connected to a current VM broadband account then the VM Forum Team should be able to arrange for it to be deleted.

As other posters have said this type of scam email is quite common and rarely genuine.  Suggest that you wait for the Forum Team to reach this thread in a day or so and just ignore the fake scam email.

Wait for the VM forum team to reply here (usually within a few days) and they will arrange to delete it for you.

Sometimes the bitcoin threat email is just a hoax (I have had the same one myself in the past) but sometimes the scammers do use the old email account/password to start their scamming activities (such as emailing your contacts and trying to access other services and set up new ones with the email login/password).

As advised by others above, if you have used that login/password combo elsewhere change those accounts now so that each has a unique password and set up two factor authentication on your accounts where possible.

If you think that old NTL email address may still be logged on any services you still use, remove all traces of it from your online accounts.

Hi All 👋 Just returning to update this public thread.

Thanks to Jackydog for PMing with me! ✉ - We were able to confirm the details needed to offer support.

With a little bit of self-care via this help-page 👉https://www.virginmedia.com/help/broadband/manage-email-account they were able to delete any of the appropriate emails, and I also raised this with our IT team to be sure. These have now been closed and deleted. If you need any more information in future, we have a help page here for what to do if you believe your VM email has been hacked. 👉 ://www.virginmedia.com/help/security/why-is-my-virgin-media-email-hacked
I was also able to help update one of the passwords to ensure it's security. It looks like everything is now resolved 🤞

If there are any further issues please do let us know so we can pick things back up again. Wishing you all the best! 🌞

Logged out of email now after you changed password molly!

  • Hi,

I have received exactly the same email and currently unable to access my virgin.net email account that I've used for over 20 years. My password no longer works - and I cannot reset as told I don't have a virgin media account. I've tried all the support routes and none have been able to help.

I am still receiving emails through my email application so I can receive, I just cannot login to my online account to be able to change my password or send new emails. Any help the forum team can provide to help me get back into my account is much appreciated. Having had this account for so long, it is embedded into much of my life and I am struggling without it.

    Many thanks

    Warren

You would do best to start your own topic rather than join this one to avoid future confusion.

Are you currently a VM broadband customer (sounds like possibly not from your description).

It is quite possible (likely) that VM is in the process of deleting your email address if you are no longer a VM broadband customer.

If you can still receive emails through an email app, you should backup your mailbox ASAP as you may lose access from the app next.

You should also set about quickly converting any online accounts which require access to the virgin.net address over to a new third party email address (while you can still receive email security notifications from providers while you switch email addresses)
