I am having work carried out on my home and some of it needs to be removed. I want to do it safely but have seen some conflicting answers as to whether I need permission from virgin.  I'm not intending to remove the underground cable, just to the rather ugly box on the wall.

You won't get any help from VM since you aren't a current customer.

The cable is not high voltage so safe to remove yourself.

Within the wall box outside, you should probably find that there is a connector which joins the internal cabling to the external cabling. You should be able to disconnect the internal cabling there and remove it from your home. If you want to be really thorough, fit a terminator cap to the end of the outside coax cable.
