BT revises phone switchover schedule
In the news today
with a mention of an 'interim, dedicated landline service' for non-broadband customers (but doesn't elaborate on what that is exactly).
Seems to be no mention in the news, as yet, of a similar change from any other providers.
This new service is called SOTAP for Analogue (Single Order Transitional Access Product for Analogue) and will be a voice-only analogue line which closely emulates a PSTN line (so will be powered as well). A key word is "Transitional" as the intention is to help some people up to about 2030 in this transitional period. The customers who are on SOTAP lines will have their numbers ported to it.
It seems as if this service will only be available at LLU exchanges, but no explanation has been given. If someone knows better, jump in here.
It's not known what this SOTAP line will connect to, and an Openreach session with two people to explain this service failed to answer this rather important question. Hopeless! Now my guess will be an Analog Telephone Adapter (ATA) with IP packets managed by SIP to route calls to recipients.
