Breaking: OFCOM investigating VM over difficulty cancelling VM contracts

Ofcom has today opened an own-initiative investigation into Virgin Media’s compliance with its contract termination and complaints handling/facilitating appropriate access to ADR obligations during 2022/23, following complaints received from consumers.

You can help Ofcom in its investigation by letting them know all about your cancellation experience with VM here.

None of this will come as a huge surprise to those who have battled with offshore CS, endless retention conversations, abrupt call terminations, and the extraordinary expediency of being required to resort to snail mail to beg for a cancellation.

  • Six months on and not a squeak from Ofcom. I see no real movement or sense of urgency over this from VM either.

Looking at Ofcom's open cases it seems its Enforcement Team is woefully resourced and /or lacking any real oversight.

Many of its open cases date back a year and one goes all the way back to 2017.

I did chase up the VM case with Ofcom a few months ago and was met with a very frosty and haughty "just who do you think you are" type response. I see the Guardian got likewise (all in the thread).

    So...who polices the police?

  • In the spirit of recent reposts of this thread I thought it timely to remind everyone of it.

  • Today marks the first anniversary of the start of this Ofcom investigation into Virgin Media.

The team that is now entering its thirteenth month trying to work out if VM broke Ofcom rules around ease of cancellation and complaints management can be reached at enforcement@ofcom.org.uk quoting case ref CW/01275/07/23.

  • I have just emailed the Ofcom Enforcement Team requesting an update on this investigation given that over 18 months have now passed without one from them. I fully expect another arrogant brush off like the "who are you" response I got last time I tried. Quangos eh?

  • Two years ago today Ofcom started this investigation. There have been zero updates. Some complex public inquiries have been wrapped up faster.

OFCOM, alas, is the World’s most useless and ineffective regulator?

Through work, I know and engage with quite a few American colleagues who complain about their equivalent (the FCC), and I always say, ‘hang on, you think that's bad......'
