Where is my 5GHZ network?

Hi everyone,
I have Teckin Smart plugs, and was trying to add a new one. Tried two as a test and unable to connect them to the 2.4GHZ network on my Hub4.

Googling, got me to a BT forum, where on their router it was advised to disable 5GHZ, at least for the connection. So I thought I would try that, and low and behold, they both connected in a heartbeat.
I then enabled the 5GHZ network.
Previously to this, I also renamed the 5G network to 5-VMxxxxxx as this laptop will connect at 5G, but my phone will not. When I first got this hub, I was getting 130Mb on wifi, which I thought was great. I was only getting about 25Mb on my own TP Link router and pretty much the same with the hub on 2.4.

However my 5G network is nowhere to be seen? I have rebooted the router via the GUI and the switch at the back, still nothing.

So what has gone on with this hub please?

  • Wi-Fi channel 124 is a DFS channel. That means when you enable the 5GHz band the Hub spends some time listening for conflicting radar broadcasts on that channel.  But the service should start in under 10 mins.

Try changing the channel to 36 or 44 and the 5GHz Wi-Fi service should start more promptly.

This has hopefully helped me too, thanks and 🤞

My 5ghz WiFi was using channel 108 and although other devices were ok, the 360 box kept disconnecting this evening and not recognising the channel at all. Changing the hub settings from Smart to a fixed channel 36 seems to have fixed it - for now.

        Hi Poddys

We are glad to hear our community was able to help with this issue 🙂 Please do not hesitate to contact us if you need any further help and we will do our best to help from here.

  • OK, I had a backup config file from July (probably when I got this hub)
I reloaded that and still cannot see the 5GHz in InSSIDer. Network name went back to same as 2.4G.
However as I went to rename the network again, I clicked on th info bubble, and that stated it must start and end with a letter, so why it accepts and saves 5-VMxxxxxx is beyond me. 😞
Will now try a reboot with -5G appended to the name.

Rebooted and still not there? 😞
I know it cannot be the length of the name as there is one near me with -EXT appended to it.
Plus my hub is only giving out n, when the other VM hubs are giving out a & c ?

In the SSID scan shown above the Wi-Fi channels covered are only from 1 to 11,
these are all on the Wi-Fi 2.4GHz band which does not support either 802.11a or 802.11ac

802.11a and 802.11ac are only supported on the 5GHz band,
which are channel number from 36 & above.

Is there a filter in place that is limiting the view to the 2.4GHz only
or is this info from a computer / mobile with a 2.4GHz only Wi-Fi adaptor ?

  • No, the inSSIDER is from my laptop which has a Broadcom BCM4352HMB 802.11ac 2x2 Wi-Fi Adapter
I believe that is 5G as when I first installed the hub, I was getting 130Mb on this laptop.
I have not played around with the hub much at all, certainly not changing channels. So the 5G has always been on 124. I do get warnings when I go manual abour 124 being DFS, which means nothing to me, as it has always been that.?
I just had another look and it is now showing. I have connected to it and am getting 190Mb :-), so well happy.
    Thank you.
If it plays up again, I will switch to another channel that you advise.

    Thanks again.

Unless you disable the "Smart Wifi" as  well, the Hub can move the Wifi around channels as it sees fit.  This can lead to Wifi disconnections.  Best to scan your environment and fix the Hub's band channels yourself.  Btw, if you are using the Connect app, it can also reset your Hub to what it thinks is best .....

      Thanks.

I have selected Disable Channel Optimization so as to be able to make changes.

Also remember that a router on the DFS channels retests every day to check for radar signals. If it detects a signal at any retest it will either turn off or move to a non DFS channel, depending how it is programmed. I've seen this happen.

Over many parts of the country, particularly in lower-lying areas there is no problem with DFS channels, it just depends where you are.
