Very old router replacement

My son has moved into a private student house that has Virgin. The WiFi is poor in his room. The modem/router is a Cisco DPC3925. Looks like these are ancient. I'm assuming that Virgin will upgrade this for free if the landlord contacts them?

I'm a virgin customer my own upgrades were due to equipment trials or dead kit!

Since they have a hub that's older than the hub3 then the account holder should be able to request a free upgrade due to possible security updates issues.

    See https://www.virginmedia.com/help/how-to/broadband/device-security-information

The account holder may also be able to upgrade the hub (depending upon the speed of their package) by logging into My Virgin Media. Info below from the following page:-

    https://www.virginmedia.com/broadband/existing-customer-deals/hub

    Can I upgrade the Hub?
If you currently have a Hub 3 or older model (including the Superhub 1A, 2A etc.) you’re eligible for a Hub upgrade if you order or upgrade to one of our Gig1 Fibre broadband packages.
Sign in to My Virgin Media to check your existing package and upgrade your service today.

  • That is almost certainly obsolete, won't even be getting security updates. Virgin have tried to upgrade anyone below the Hub 3. As long as the account holder contacts Virgin [and gets an agent who knows what they are doing] they will upgrade it.

The Cisco DPC3925 is VM's original hub with ancient Wi-Fi (802.11n) and should certainly be replaced with a hub 3 with Wi-Fi 5 (802.11ac), a hub 4 with Wi-Fi 5 but with better internal components and more antennas or hub 5 with Wi-Fi 6 (802.11ax).

  • Hi mattbabs,

Thanks for taking the time to contact us via the Community. It's lovely having you on board with us in the Forums. ⭐

We're sorry to hear this. The account holder would need to get in touch with us so we can go through diagnostics. If replacement equipment is needed, we would of course provide this.

    Many thanks,
