There is a suspicious device connected to external Virgin Media box

Yesterday there was a power anomaly that turned off my external monitors for 1-2 seconds and my router was stuck on solid green light and green wifi symbol with no internet connection for around 2 hours.

Today walking back home at night time I noticed a device hooked up to my external Virgin Media box with two green lights.  (Note: my neighbour is ground floor and I am first floor.)

The photograph is a tad blurry as I didn't want to be obvious that I was taking photograph of it as I did not want to face a conflict with my neighbour.

I've done some searches online and I cannot see this mentioned anywhere before on Virgin Media Community or google images.

Is this a device used by my downstairs neighbour to steal internet (and possibly tv) through this external Virgin Media box?

If this isn't a theft device, what is it?

I'd have to wait until I know that my neighbour is out of his property to avoid conflict

Sounds like a tricky relationship. Aside from the brown box outside is there anything about your VM connection that causes you similar concern eg unknown devices connected to your WiFi etc? If so you might want to change your VM broadband password.

That's the ONT which is ment to be inside the brown box, it converts light on fibre to coax

Clearly I need to go to Specsavers !

This is what an ONT would look like when is secured in the brown omni box,
    but with the cover removed.

The cover of the OMNI box should also be secured with a plastic wire tie.

  • You can't 'steal' internet unless you have an ethernet connection available to the outside world, or your Wi-Fi is comprimised.
