Punished for using the 5x in Modem Mode?

I’ve been a Virgin customer since last summer. My previous supplier had been flawless, but I wanted faster internet, so I made the change. This was a huge mistake.

I work in IT and am always messing around with different firewalls and WiFI kit. Had I have known that I’d end up with the Hub 5x with no official modem mode I’d have stayed well clear.

Sometime in January I found a video with instructions for setting up modem mode on the 5x. To my amazement it worked, and I managed to get this running with my current UniFi install.

Since then, I’ve had several outages. They usually last hours. The fix is to take the 5x  out of modem mode and set it back up as normal.

My question is, are the outages some type of punishment from Virgin?

I can’t understand why they provide such a limited router with their premium broadband service.

Thanks

Garry

  • Technically modem mode isn't currently supported so there wouldn't be any help with your issues from VM.

Are you using the  10Gbps port?

No, Unfortunately it only works in the normal gig ports. It works really well but around once a week the connection drops for hours unless I reset the 5x back to stock. I just cant understand why they supply such a basic router.
