Phone Switch Over

My grandma as far as she is aware doesn't pay for broadband. When the digital land-line switch over happened for whatever reason, a router was installed that the phone is plugged into.

I have connected her smart tv to the router and there is an Internet connection.

Question is - if she streamed from ITVX etc would this incur extra charges because she doesn't pay for broadband?

Thanks.

If you are not paying for Broadband you won’t get it. The phone service is IP driven, but does not access the internet. So the router will show all the signs of being connected, but is locked down.

Thanks for the reply, she does have a virgin TV box, that uses an Internet connection doesn't it for catch up purposes?

There is 100% an Internet connection there. I connected to it and watched a video on YouTube. Through the smart TV not YouTube on the virgin box

      I'm wondering if

      a) she would get charged on a pay as you go basis.

      b) it's some kind of low speed Internet

      Not sure.

If she has a VM Hub and TV box she will be paying a monthly subscription to Virginmedia. She may have forgotten this, but somehow they will be taking money from her.  It may well be more than she needs to pay.

You should check how much she is paying them and which TV channels are included.

She is aware that she is paying a monthly subscription for phone and tv, she only has basic TV package.

When the phone switch over happened they installed a VM hub/router thing. A few days later I connected to it and there was no Internet connection. Today I connected to it and there is an Internet connection. I just want to work out if I can connect her smart TV to it for ITVX maybe netlflix or if she will be charged for using the Data. She only has an old box a Cisco/TIVO box and ITVX isn't on there because from what iv read it requires a broadband connection which she didn't have so she didn't get an upgraded box.

If she has VM TV then VM Broadband is mandatory & it will be part of her package already.

If she only has a TiVO I can offer two explanations.

    1. Her package has changed and she's entitled to a V6 or 360 (but neither has been installed).

    2. There is some error in configuration if she's getting broadband. I don't see how VM can charge her for a provisioning mistake.

Get her to check for any emails or letters she may have received recently.
