Philips tv restricted access to Virgin Hub 5

We have recently had the virgin hub 5 fitted. When connecting 2 of our Philips TVs we get a Restricted Access message. The tvs and programs we try running are buffering each time we try to watch live football any ideas.

The other tvs in the house connect to Hub 5 without any Restricted Access message. The service we used before this was not a Virgin Hub 5 and we had no problem with any of the tvs no restricted access messages.

The router is pushing out plenty but there seems to be some sort of bad set up between the router and tvs.

  • Is it the Philips TVs or some form of "non-commercial programs" that are reporting the Restricted Access ?

    1.  Log into Hub 5 GUI

    2.  Click the Modem mode menu item

    3.  Tick Enable Modem Mode and then Apply changes

    4.  The Hub 5 should reboot into Modem Mode

    5.  Turn the Hub 5 off & then connect your router to one of the Ethernet ports on the Hub

    6.  Turn the router on and let it settle.  Its default state should be to connect via DHCP.

    7.  Turn on the Hub 5 and after it boots, it should hand a public IP address to your router.

    Let us know.

Hi Once again thanks for your help. I put the Hub 5 into Modem mode and followed your instructions. It booted up and the colour on the Hub 5 is yellow at the bottom ( im color blind so could be green ) Plugged the TP link in and logged into the TP Link router ( set it up before turning the Hub 5 to modem ) and we have wifi speeds of approx 300mbps on my phone close by. After setting the hub and new router I done a factory reset and unplugged the Philis tv from the wall left it fo a few min. Once again the tv message comes up as restricted assess nothing different from the existing problem so back to where I started. This has only happened since changing to Hub 5.

First, if you are in modem mode (you can double check by going into the hub GUI at 192.168.100.1), the Hub 5 has nothing to do with devices attached to the TP-Link router. We may yet be in WPA territory whereby the setting required by the TV has nothing been set in the router.  What I’ve just said only applies to WiFi, though. Refresh my memory, what happens if the tv is connected by cable to the router?

Might you also photograph/paste the two Network Settings pages from the TV when wirelessly connected?

Those settings are as they should be.  How far have you researched this problem on the web?  For example, to get out of the restricted mode takes some timing skill when resetting the TV.  As in:

    ----------------------------------

FIXED!!! What a crappy glitch. My TV had been unusable for almost a year. Finally, we just dedicated a couple hours to trying to reset it and we finally got it! Here's what you do:

    1. Unplug the TV and plug it back in. When it starts up, it will give you a random window of time before going into restricted mode. Sometimes 2 seconds, sometimes 10.

    2. As soon as the home screen comes on, push 'options' on the remote.

    3. Select 'settings' (it is all the way to the right, so we would just hold down the right button u til you get there.

    4. Go down to 'device preference' (four down).

    5. Go all the way to the bottom (holding down works the best) and select 'reset'.

    6. Confirm the reset.

    7. Select 'erase everything'

At this point, it may still say it is entering restricted mode. It did that to us a couple times and we immediately tried again. Finally, when we just let it enter restricted mode right after selecting erase everything and it started the factory reset. I think once you hit erase everything, it will eventually start the erase, you just have to let it think for a minute - even if it goes back into restricted mode. SPEED IS THE KEY! Push those buttons fast, don't give up, and save your damn TV! Ours works great now, but I'm never using restricted mode again. Good luck!

Thank you for the information. Im not getting a message of restricted access when I unplug and do a factory reset the restricted access message Im getting is when Im trying to connect o the internet. I was hoping putting the Hub 5 in modem mode and using a different router would of worked unfortunately not. My remote appears to be different buy tomorrow I will try this and see what the result is.

It didn't work with the new router because the problem lies in the TV as explained in the links I provided.  It would seem that the fix involves several attempts needing more than a pair of hands.  Keep us posted.

Hi thanks for that there was some reference to buy and use a router in a few others remarks that why I went for that option. If want to set the Hub 5 back to router mode I think its a different IP address to put into the browser does not seen to work on the original IP

Do stay in modem mode.  It'll perform much better than router mode.  It's the TV problem that needs fixing.  Are you going to multiple-try that reset thing to get you out of Restricted Mode?  That's what your TV is now in.

Hi Again. Ok I will take your advice to use the new router and not return to the Virgin Hub 5 to router mode and yes I will try that tomorrow as I need the steps to climb up and get the plus from the wall mounted tv.

Hi I tried this method three times today. Its not like for like I suppose due to the model differences but the reset is the same result erasing everything as it was a new tv. Unfortunately the result is the same restricted assess message when connecting to wifi. Everyone has been very helpful trying to solve this I appreciate their thoughts. I must push Philips for a solution and if nothing else I might have to live with it.

As it's a new TV don't you have any remedies with the seller?
