New Customer - why is the wifi so bad?

Hi, I’ve recently swapped from BT to Virgin for improved download/upload speed. I was getting 50mb on BT and now get 250mb on Virgin…sometimes.
This is the problem, my BT wifi could handle loads of devices, worked all across the house but Virgin is rubbish. You get 250mb on one device but as soon as we have 2 or 3 devices, it slows dramatically or drops competely. Right now i am using 4g on my phone because it won’t even load a web page, yet my wife is on a zoom call downstairs.
Should I buy a different router? Is it the fibre into the house? Virgin are useless. They just say ‘there are no outages in your area’. I think their routers must just be awful.

Any ideas from anyone out there?

thanks

  • I understand that the BT hub 2 has very good WiFi whereas the WiFi from VM hubs is notoriously poor. Hence many of the old hands on this forum put the hub in modem mode and use our own better routers.

Vm solution for Wifi are the Pods  https://www.virginmedia.com/help/wifi-max

Depending on the Tier you are on, they will be free or £8pm.

You could also pay £25 to have an engineer move your Hub to a more central location for a better wifi distribution.

Personally I just use my own Wifi solution.

Thanks- what is ‘your own wifi solution’? The router is in the same spot as the BT one in the hallway in the centre of the house. I never used repeaters with my BT router, so I wondered if there is a known issue with Virgin routers? Is there a setting I can change? I don’t understand how Virgin speeds can be faster to the house but so bad inside. Has to be the router

  • The internet is terrible. I’m waiting for my contract to finish and leaving.

Have you tried relocating your router or hub as its also an antenna system for your WiFi. So the same principles apply like any antenna system the higher it is in your home.... the better the signal. 👍
