MoCA and VM cabling

Hi all,

I would appreciate some technical advice please. I'm just about to leave VM after a few years and was wondering if its possible to use a MoCA box with the VM cable thats left in my house to get wired internet to all the rooms I have cable in and if it is possible the new broadband provider is installing 2.5Gbps so would the VM coax cable handle this speed.

Any advice would be appreciated.

  • Assuming you were using HFC, so coax cable, and you ensure none of the cabling you are using is connected to the VM network, it should be fine since it's just copper.

Technically the cable used for VM is the same, or better, standard used for MoCA (RG6).

       Thank you for the reply.

I would be using the bog standard cable VM fit during home installation and it won't be connected to any VM services at all. Would the said cable be able to carry the 2.5Gbps speed as long as the MoCA box is 2.5Gbps compatible as well ?

Yes, 2.5Gb is technically possible.  The VM cable should not be connected to any outside VM equipment first.  All splitters have to be replaced with MoCA compatible kit. All ends to be terminated with a MoCA to ethernet unit.  Note each end unit also requires a PSU, and the kit itself is not exactly cheap?

Would it not be better to install Cat 6 ethernet cable in place of the co-ax cable and just use plain ethernet equipment?

I would steer clear of MoCA, it’s used a lot in the US, but rarely in the UK and you will get little support. It’s also very costly, over £100 for 2 adapters and that would get you a lot of Ethernet cable or even fibre.
