M500 - laggy connection

Hi,

Hope someone can help. M500 package, run the router in Modem mode connected to Eero mesh network. Speeds and connection been mostly reliable. Since 16th December speeds are fine but seeing real latency issues while gaming. Reset Virgin router, reset Euro’s, checked and replaced cables but made no difference. Tried Virgin support on Dec 23rd who insisted it was the Eero’s causing the issue but they would monitor and contact me the following day if they saw an issue. Said I should factory reset the router which I did but made no difference. Should also say there are no know local issues. Started a Thinkbroadband BQM test on the 23rd and saw the following consistently through to 24th at just after 0700 where the gaming lag disappeared. The dropped packets and increased latency around 1800 was me downloading games and patches ahead of Christmas.

For the next week I’ve had no issues as can be seen in the BQM graph below

However from this morning the large latency issues back. Online gaming really difficult, ping from Mac or PC to known fast internet addresses show huge variance over a minute or two.

Usage during this period - web browsing from 1000 onwards, online gaming from 15:45 to 17:30 and no downloading or streaming apart from that so a pretty quiet network. Any help or advice in how to fix this? I’ll retry the Virgin helpdesk tomorrow.

regards,

Ian

I suggest a router with QoS/BWM it seems you may have thing downloading or uploading you don't know about causing latency spikes

  • Hello Iandick,

Welcome to the Community and thanks for taking the time to post here on the forums. I’m sorry to hear of the issues that you’re having with your connection at the moment. I've looked into this from here and cannot see any issues with your connection or in the local area. As you posted on Monday, have you had any improvements in your services since then or are you still experiencing the same problems?

    Kind Regards,
