Internet connection seems unstable

Hello,

We have a Hitron CGNV4 router with internal wifi turned off and 2x Unifi Access Points.  We are having issues with the connection to phones, PS5 etc just dropping and then struggling to reconnect. On the PS5 we have seen failed to get IP address sometimes. Unifi logs show 96%+ WIFI experience.

Running speedtest, downlink is 300MBPS, uplink is 20MBPS and ping 25ms and seems consistent.

This is the router log. I believe the weird date on row 5 of 1970 is when we last reset the router.

I would appreciate any thoughts on whether this log activity is normal or could be related to the dropouts ?

Thanks for any input. Alex.

  • Thanks a lot, will take a look at the BQM.  We only use wifi with this router outside of a smart TV, the APs and smart thermostat all of which have never gone offline but we are unlikely to see if there are connection drops.

I think from memory the SLA is 48hrs but ideally would like to isolate the issue to the router/cabinet or the access points before getting virgin involved as have to ensure we are home etc for a visit

Quick update as you have been very helpful. The BQM is pretty consistent on each day  and showing no packet loss so I think is not an issue. We have noticed problems connecting is only on 5G and not 2.4G WIFI and seems to be position dependent as moving 2m away from the AP prevents speedtest from connecting hence is seeming unreliable for general use. Scanned our 5G wifi and other neighbouring wifi powers which seem ok so I think there is some other form of interference going on. So looks like an AP issue but very strange

If similar to a residential Hub, the DS looks within spec, but the US power is high.

Setup a BQM to monitor the incoming circuit - http://www.thinkbroadband.com/ping

I believe the weird date on row 5 of 1970 is when we last reset the router.

Yes, that's a standard reference UNIX epoch time stamp for measuring uptime.

The other point, is this only Wifi or does it affect cabled connections?

Finally, don't forget Business connections have an SLA for service, so you could escalate that way?

Downstream Power & SNR look ok.

Upstream Power Levels of 35 to 49 dBmV are preferred, getting into the 50s is on the high end, this is the measure of how strongly the Hitron is transmitting  to the street cabinet.

I am not aware of forums for VMB customers.

But the way the Hitron and VM Hubs work are very similar and sometimes the trouble with a connection can be seen in the Upstream and Downstream connection details.   Share those if you like.

Hinton routers suggest a Business connection.  This forum is for residential connections.

Ah ok, yes we moved our home from residential to business a few years ago to support our home based business. Is there a similar forum for Hitron routers ?
