Hub5

I've been trying to get hold of the upgraded hub with no joy, can I pay for one or should one be sent out automatically? I'm not receiving the full 1gb which I've read isn't actually possible with the hub 4 so wonder why the 5 wasn't offered when I renewed?

A Hub 4 can easily deliver over 1Gb/s for two or more devices.

To clarify what Client62 has stated. VM have never ever said that the speed of their connection is for one device, it’s aggregated over all devices on the connection. I have over 60 devices on my LAN and never ever is there only one device active at any one time. Even when you do a speed test, other than the samknows one built into the hub, unless you physically turn off all other devices there will be more than one active. Just do a Wireshark trace and you would not believe all the data flowing.

Even with idle stuff going on a device to the hub 5 with 2.5Gb NIC will pull over 1Gb due to VM set rate limiting so it is possible to go faster its just that VM don't care and to say to other ISP "look we are fast and give over 1Gb* when its not really true and VM and no longer the fastest so that saying was short lived.

*not true with hub 4 that is...

    I miss editing me post😞

    Knows their stuff

VM never stated it was shared bandwidth either in any small print or t&C's.

Wish people would search forums, but basically, you shouldn't have to pay similar to other customers that have superior kit to what you have. The hub5 is WiFi ax and has a 2.5gbps port that is useful in modem mode to connect to a 2.5gbps or above switch.

Raise a formal complaint, or if near end of contract, use as a reason for not renewing. You can get a hub5 as long as stock levels allow, you just have to stand your ground. You should not have to pay for inferior kit compared to another customer on the same tier. If you don't intend to make use of hub5 as a router and the WiFi ax capability with ax capable devices, OR you don't intend to use in modem mode and connect the 2.5gbps port to a switch that has 2.5gbps or above, then a hub4 is good enough.

"The hub5 is WiFi ax and has a 2.5gbps port that is useful in modem mode to connect to a 2.5gbps or above switch." True, but the OP has not said they have a 2.5G switch or are using modem mode.  A formal comment is just a waste of everybody time.

If you dont mind paying, consider using the Hub5 in modem mode with your own better quality router and wireless equipment (nb - if you have the Hub5-x - it doesn't do modem mode!)

Note that using your own router won't give faster speeds as 1Gbps coming into a hub will always be reduced out of a Gigabit LAN port by Ethernet frame and TCP/IP overheads. You might be lucky to get as much as 940Mbps.

Even if you use the 2.5Gbps port of the hub 5 you still suffer overheads but would expect a bit better than 940Mbps - but you won't get some big increase.
