Hub5 smart mode

Hub5 insists on smart mode. I need 2.4g WiFi for old devices (ring 2chimer) which will not work in smart mode. All the app will not let me manage network when using two WiFi frequencies . I have to use pc to change anything. This is very frustrating. Had been using hub3 in modem mode and a netgear router and that worked fine  using 2.4 and 5ghz frequencies. Not impressed.

Remove the app from all devices.  Reboot the Hub, split the SSID, manually set the channels etc.  Do not reinstall the app as it will reset the Hub again.   It's just the way the VM Intelligent Wifi is setup to work for the Pods.  You can however, use 3rd party Wifi extenders with a split SSID.

    •    Access your Hub by navigating to 192.168.0.1
    •    Login with the default login info (on base of Hub) unless you've already updated it.
    •    Go to Advanced Settings > Wireless > Security
    •    Disable the Smart Optimisation on the wifi bands.
    •    Under Wireless Frequency 2.4GHz change the Wifi Network Name (SSID), suggest append _2 to the end.
    •    Repeat for the Wireless Frequency 5GHz, suggest append _5 to the end and click on Apply changes
    •    Try to avoid spaces and periods in the SSID names as they can cause issues with certain devices.

So the mobile app is useless when using separate frequencies. Not helpful at all.

As I said, the whole Wifi is handed by the Intelligent Wifi software which uses a single SSID.  This is needed to integrate the Pods and the Hub as a single Wifi solution.  If this is not suitable, there are 3rd party alternatives that can work with the Hub set to split SSID's.

Useless is being very gentile indeed.
The Connect app is totally forbidden in our home.

If it is installed without warning the following happens to our VM Hub :

      1) Smart Wi-Fi aka Wireless Channel Optimisation is Re-Enabled.
      2) Auto Wi-Fi channels are Re-Enabled
      3) Guest Wi-Fi is Re-Enabled
      4) Reserved IPs for a Printer & VoIP phones are Deleted.

Do the setup by hand in the Hub admin menu and retain control.

As you used to run in modem mode I suggest you return to that. The only ‘facility’ the hub5 offer over the hub3 from a users perspective if the 2.5Gb port. This is only any use if you have networking equipment that supports this.

  • So I was told I needed a hub5 to have access to 1ghz network. So if the hub5 software is so SMART how come it refuses to let a 2.4ghz device join the network. This needs to be fixed to claim the software is “smart”.   Very unfriendly software to say the least.

There are a few of the issues commonly involved.

      1) Many 2.4GHz only devices are not able to connect to the 2.4GHz Wi-Fi 6 of the Hub 5.

The fix is to add a basic Wi-Fi 4 or 4 + 5 access point or Retail Wi-Fi Repeater ( not VM Pod )

      2) Dire management apps that fail to manage a 2.4GHz device when the mobile running the app has connected on the 5GHz band.

The fix is for the configuration period disable the 5GHz Wi-Fi of the Hub so the mobile and device are both on the 2.4GHz band.

      3) This may appear harsh, but it is a very persistent issue, not reading and following the makers reset / new install process to the letter.  Reality is only you can see the device and what it is doing and how it is to supposed to be configured.

      4) Some 2.4GHz only devices will not connect if Wireless Security has WPA3-SAE enabled, try with the 2.4GHz band set to Security : WPA2-PSK ( ONLY ).
