Hub 5x Modem Mode

Service installed today. Sales rep told me modem mode is now working on Hub 5x at time of sale. It is not, unless there is an update I or the significant number of waiting Hub 5x users don't know about?

What is the latest please?

Did the sales rep lie to me?

  • I can't see anything for Smart Security on the Hub or connect app right now, so I guess it's not running. I will try more troubleshooting on my issue.

The Hub settings and the app are designed for the convenience of Virginmedia. They would prefer everything to be left at the default settings, as that will cause VM the minimum of errort to support the user. .

Obviously correct, but it would be good if more savvy users could be supported too, who want to run their own kit. As I said before, I'd be happy to put a factory reset hub back in place before calling support if that was a T&C of modem mode etc. The fact the deployment doesn't use a typical ONT setup basically means it's a problem of their own creation. An ONT + hub would work for most users just fine and also allow more advanced users to run what they need as well. I suspect they just did the minimum to move the hardware and software of Hub 5 into something that worked with XGS-PON, rather than thinking perhaps some new or different harware and software would be better. I suppose it means less re-training of their expert support team. I'm already counting down the days until the contract is over and hoping another supplier will be on the nexfibre network by then.

Yes, I like the Openreach ONT solution tbh.   As for modems, I'm old enough to remember NTL/VM only supplied modems!  None of this Hub nonsense .....

  • OK so I think some of my connectivity issues are related to DNSSEC. Once I disable that on my local DNS server, I can resolve some sites I've had issue with as well. Yet to see if it fixes local connectivity issues, but I'd bet maybe it was part of the problem. I mean, even gov.uk doesn't work. That's a fairly common site. Why are VM stopping DNSSEC from working with the hub?

  • Well, in my early broadband days I got a modems from BT Openworld in 2000 and Telewest in 2001 (but you were on your own if you wanted a router behind it). To be fair the hub, including the hub 5X, makes a lot of sense for the average punter as the modem or ONT is combined with a router in one box.

DNSSEC is in the clear but if VM hijack DNS to their DNS servers without DNSSEC support then its not going to work.

I think Highway's message is that unusual/esoteric protocols are beyond their responsibility.

Beyond that, a quick google search doesn't reveal any UK ISPs who support DNSSEC.  If VM route you under all circumstances through their DNS, any DNSSEC support you may get fro, say, google DNS, will be suppressed.
