Hub 5 Modem Mode only functions correctly if I don't turn off and on the hub

I believe the steps to followed to switch VM Hub into modem mode is as follows:

  1. Access your hub at 192.168.0.1, sign in, and put it into modem mode. On the Hub 3, the bottom LED will change to magenta; on a Hub 4, the LED band will be green; on a Hub 5, the LED will be green1. It's best to do this from a wired connection.
  2. Turn off the hub and disconnect any Ethernet cables.
  3. Fully initialize your own router or mesh master unit and ensure the WAN port is set to DHCP. For some routers or mesh systems, this may need to be done in router mode before entering modem mode1.
  4. Connect your router or mesh master unit to the VM hub with an Ethernet cable (Cat5e or Cat6). On a Hub 5, use port 41.
  5. Turn on the VM hub.
  6. You should now be able to access the internet, and the hub will be on 192.168.100.1.

Problem: While step 1 works perfectly and the hub is in modem mode, following step 2 (turning off the hub and disconnecting Ethernet cables) and the subsequent steps results in the inability to access the internet or the hub on 192.168.100.1. I have tried several times without success. Each time, I have to factory reset the hub to regain access. I need help resolving this issue as I rely on my Google Nest Wifi. Thank you.

Mess is the problem you need a router with WAN port

You can test this with a PC only to the hub in modem mode and should work note that the PC will/may try Automatic Private IP Addressing give it a kick by unpluging ethernet and plug it back in

Unfortunately, I get the same results when I test it with a PC only to the hub.  It works (i.e. I am able to access the internet or the hub on 192.168.100.1. ) immediately after I have switch to modem mode without turning off and on the hub. After I turn off and on the hub and reconnect I am unable to access the internet or the hub on 192.168.100.1.

Changing device with different MAC needs the hub to be off for 2 minutes when in modem mode

There is no need to remove any Ethernet cables, I’ve done this many times without removing them. The key is that the VM hub must be the last thing you power up.

Do a full 60 second pinhole reset on the Hub.  Do not reboot the Hub as it will do any reboots it needs. Leave for a while to update to the latest firmware. This may take a while, just be patient.  After this put the Hub in modem mode and confirm the LED is a solid green.  Reboot the Hub again, does the LED remain solid green? If so power off the Hub and attach your laptop via cable. With the laptop set to DHCP, switch on the Hub and the laptop should get a WAN IP.  Does this step work?

Yes the steps has worked and I have a WAN IP. I am also able to access the internet or the hub on 192.168.100.1. To connect my google nest wifi router on that same port (i.e. port 4). Should I follow the same step by powering off the Hub and attach my google nest wifi via cable this time?
      Thank you.

Okay, the Hub is now working in modem mode.  So it is safe to switch it off.  Make sure the Google Nest is in DHCP mode (Automatic IP) and connect it via a cable to the Hub 5.  I would suggest only using one of the 1Gb ports and not the 2.5Gb port.  Power on the Nest and wait a few minutes, then power on the Hub 5.  The Nest should get a WAN IP at this point, if not power cycle the Hub 5.  Note the Hub can only have one connection when in modem mode, so the other ports cannot be used.  If you need additional ports, connect a gigabit switch to the Nest.

  • It all setup and working as expected. Thank you all for your help.
