how to disable 5ghz band on a hub5

I need to disable the 5Ghz band to allow set up of my 2.4Ghz smart plug for table lamps. I have logged into the hub but the disable button is greyed out. I have taken this up already with Virgin tech but they could not understand why the disable buttom was like this.

A way to sort this is needed.

  • Hi marshall54

A warm welcome to our Community Forums and thanks for your post.

We have some info here on how to configure advanced settings on the hub. If after logging in the button is greyed out, I'd suggest a Pin hole reset of your hub for a timed 60 seconds before trying again.

Let us know how you get on so we can offer further support if needed!

  • I managed to do this but still couldn't get the plugs to link. Not happy. Wish I had kept the Hub3 going . WiFi keeps dropping out too .

    Any tips appreciated

    SS

      Hello Sputnikstokie.

Sorry to hear the same things causing you an issue.

Can you please try a Pinhole reset on the Hub.

Also when the WIFI drops do you have any wired devices that lose connection at the same time?

Tried the pin reset but all it did was that the hub reset to its original WiFi name and p/w. I did notice that under the Security setup it may be possible to apply a different WiFi name and p/w to the 2.4 band but as my smart sockets can't be set to only connect to that WiFi name changing it would be pointless.

      Next suggestion...

You shouldn't need to disable 5Ghz to set up a 2.4Ghz only device. If the device doesn't support 5Ghz it can't see the 5Ghz network and will pick up the 2.4Ghz network instead. Even if they have the same name that doesn't matter, the 5Ghz network doesn't exist as far as the device is concerned.

I have various TP-LInk smart plugs and bulbs that are 2.4Ghz only and the 5Ghz network doesn't bother them.

The idea that disabling the 5GHz Wi-Fi band better enables connection of a device on the 2.4GHz band is utter poppycock !

    Hub 5 Router mode - Wi-Fi 6 ( 802.11ax )

    For some devices, the Hub 5 brings a compatibility problem by having Wi-Fi 6 ( 802.11ax ) on both 2.4GHz and 5GHz.

The symptoms for a device that is not working with Wi-Fi 6 are the device does not find the Hub 5 Wi-Fi signal.

Hub 5 does not permit “ax” mode to be disabled, a workaround is to use a dual band Wi-Fi Repeater or Wireless Access point that does not support Wi-Fi 6 ( 802.11ax ).

One model that has worked is the TP-LINK RE450 / AC1750, similar products from other brands may be suitable.

Or … buy a new USB Wi-Fi adaptor for your laptop that supports 2.4  5GHz.

I don't think it's poppycock at all to need to sometimes disable (or not use) 5GHz to set up a 2.4GHz device!

When you have both the 5GHz and 2.4GHz using the same SSID and password (which is a common, easy and useful way to set devices up to also seamlessly switch between the two frequencies depending on strongest/nearest signal etc), it's a common problem for some devices to require 5GHz to be unavailable (for some strange reason) while setting up that 2.4GHz device as the device's phone/tablet App communicates as part of the new device's initial setup.

Sometimes setting up a new device while the 5GHz is active will work because the phone/tablet running the App is currently using just the 2.4GHz network (e.g. out of range of the 5GHz network), but when it's using 5GHz, then the App can't complete the initial setup but should/may work fine with 5GHz back on after setup completion.

It's not always easy to tell what frequency your phone/tablet is currently using but because 5GHz doesn't travel as far as 2.4GHz, in theory it may help to move further away from your Wi-Fi base station so your phone/tablet switches to 2.4GHz - or just turn 5GHz off in the router/base-station, or perhaps most easily temporarily change the 5GHz SSID or password (in the router) so that your phone/tablet can't connect to 5GHz while you set things up.

  • Hi, if you turn off smart WiFi then you will be able to turn off 5GHz.

    Hope this helps.
