Channel width keeps reseting

It seems my Channel width keeps reverting back to 20/40/80 after a week or so meaning I don't get full speed with 1gb on wifi, I have to manually set it to 20/40/80/160 but I'm sure at some point it will revert back again, I'm guessing that's the default and it does that after a maintance update or something?

  • This Hub 5 Wi-Fi issue was reported a few weeks back, a customer had the same problem
    of manually selecting 160MHz bandwidth but finding it repeatedly reverting to 80MHz on the  5GHz band.

    Hopefully you do not have VM Pods to compound the issue.

    Do you have the VM Connect app installed on any of your mobiles ?

    Do you have the VM Hub with Smart Wi-Fi / Wireless Channel Optimization enabled ?

    If Yes to one or both, the VM Hub will re-apply the default VM profile for Wi-Fi connections,
    ( Shared SSID, Shared Credentials, Auto Channels ), 
    we may be about to discover that profile also includes 5GHz at 80MHz channel bandwidth.

    Try :
    1) If present uninstall the VM Connect app from ALL mobiles & tablets,
    2) From the Hub 5 menu: Disable Smart Wi-Fi & Apply Changes
    3) Re-enable 160MHz channel bandwidth.
    4) See if 160MHz is maintained.

      I have none of those things, and I have those setting already, pretty sure it also changed the channel from 44 even though it's set to manual

        Channel 44 might be part of the problem. To get 160Mhz using the lower 5Ghz band requires use of the lower DFS channels from 50 to 64 as well as 36 to 48. If the hub detects non WiFi traffic on the DFS channels it will boot you off them. The upper DFS channels from 100 onward are less likely to be used, so I should try up there where it might be more stable.

        I have a hub 3, & as the 5Ghz band is crowded here I force my hub to DFS channel 52 at 80Mhz. Most of the time it stays there, but once or twice a year I get booted off it continually. I go to channel 48 for a couple of weeks & then back to 52 & it usually settles down again.

    And even if you do get it established on a DFS channel, it won't stay there permanently. The router must regularly recheck for radar signals and if finds them it will either move to the lower channels or switch off 5GHz altogether, depending on how it is programmed.

    If your selection of a particular channel with 160MHz bandwidth will take it into the DFS band, it will test for radar signals. If it finds the radar signal it will automatically reduce the bandwidth to 80MHz to avoid the DFS band.

    This is the required function of the router and you cannot avoid it.
