VM's Essential Security - Virus Protection Good or bad?

What are general thoughts on using VM's Virus Protection? Any 'Cons'?

  • We have Virus protection enabled & Parental controls disabled. Both are implemented as DNS filters, they perform blocking by returning the IP of a VM internal server as opposed to real IP of the offending wet sites, causing a web browser to throw an error or an app on a mobile or TV to fail to connect.

There are sporadic reports of false positives where commercial websites have been blocked in error, but usually where websites are blocked there are red flags reported by VirusTotal.

For general browser / TV streaming use etc, I have no problem with VM Virus Safe or with similar products like OpenDNS.  Think of it as one extra layer of protection that is free.

If you have a product that you do not wish to risk being offline due to a DNS issue, then choose a Public DNS that does not offer filtering E.g. Google DNS or Cloudflare DNS.  Better still use both as we do on our Cisco VOIP devices.
