Changing O2 tariff

I have the VM Mega Volt bundle and a pay monthly O2 SIM card.

The O2 tariff is £20 a month and I can find a better one on uSwitch for half that.

However, when I go to buy that deal, it logs me into my O2 account and shows a warning that I will lose Volt benefits, including the zone 2 roaming, which I want to keep.

There is confusing information online, some people saying you only need VM and an O2 account registered at the same address to qualify for Volt benefits, others saying the benefits might disappear but will be reactivated within 14 days.

Does anyone know how this actually works? Can I proceed with the O2 tariff change without the risk of losing Volt benefits?

When you get your other O2 contract (with a different phone number) call O2 to transfer your current number over. Note: this isn't a port. I did a similar thing, got an O2 PAYG and transferred my monthly O2 number over (but lost my VOLT as I'm now on PAYG).

    Hi cass

At one time if your O2 sim was out of contract you could keep your Volt benefits by purchasing another O2 sim from uswitch With uswitch.com you used to get the option to login to your O2 account, then if you selected that you didn't want a new SIM card sending out it would let you keep your current O2 number and start a new 12 or 24  month contract at that new price which nulled out the price you were paying O2.  (I've done it myself previously)

However there have been changes and the small print on the uswitch website <Here>now states.

"it’s worth noting that most networks no longer allow you to upgrade your existing plan through third-party retailersO2 was the last network to make this change, meaning you can’t use its website to upgrade an existing plan to a SIM only deal.

As an existing O2 customer, you can still take out an additional SIM only plan — it just won’t replace your current contract.

If you’ve found a deal through a third party like Uswitch or another comparison site, check with your network first to confirm whether it’ll be treated as an upgrade or set up as a new plan."

I'm out of contract with O2, and was tempted to cancel my current O2 sim, but I don't want to run the risk of halving my VM broadband speed down to M500. If  you want to take the chance and succedd then let me (and others know) by updating this thread.
