Tivo box loses communication with tv?

After a few months of trial and error to solve this here is my best explanation of my infuriating issue. When watching Virgin media the TV will go black and after a couple of seconds will revert to the Freeview/Android menus. Using the TV remote SOURCE button I can reselect Virgin Media but it doesn't work. Only a switch off and restart of the TV will bring me back to watching VM ... usually after 3 or 4 minutes of lost programme time.  This can happen at best once a week or at worst once a day.

I have established that:

1) The wifi does not drop (anything being streamed ie on Amazon "moves on" during the down time)

2) The TV functions during the downtime in that I can watch Freeview channels etc etc.

I have changed cables from Tivo box to TV. A full switch-off at the wall to the Tivo box gained me about 6 weeks of uninterrupted viewing and yet now I have no idea where to turn. Absolutely any suggestion as to what I can do next is VERY welcome.

Try a factory reset on the TV?  Try a different HDMI port on the TV?  Make sure the clocks on both the TV and VM Box are set at the correct time and match.

Some basics first. You've posted in the TiVo section of the forum, but if this is indeed the box you have then.. 1) It doesn't have WiFi, 2) It has its own I inbuilt internet connection, 3) It doesn't have the Amazon Prime app.

I think you have a V6 rather than a TiVo, which still runs TiVo-software but is a very different box hardware-wise. Can you confirm, using the photos on the page below as examples...

Good stuff, I'll also move this thread to the V6 section of the forum.

I'm trying to work out what you're reporting, and it sounds like the video output from your V6 is being lost, but not by virtue of the box restarting as much as just (apparently) randomly dropping the output.

That you can access all your TV settings & menus (presumably what you're referring to by "Android" & "Freeview menus") is no surprise. I'd be checking whether you can manually select the HDMI input relevant to your V6, to switch your TV to that input.

I don't see the significance of the WiFi comment, that comes from your home router..

What's the make & model of your TV?

  • Hi. many thanks for your thoughts - its greatly appreciated.

Yes .. I think you have crystallised the issue - the V6 randomly drops its video output. I only mentioned wifi and Android menus etc to illustrate that all other aspects are working normally. I have just now changed the input to the TV to another HDMI slot -so I shall monitor this for a while.

The TV is a JVC LT-40CA790.

I should mention I have an almost identical set up (different TV make) in another rarely used room which never gives an issue.

I shall report back when / if anything happens. Thanks again
