Recordings skipping

If I try to fast forward a recording or pause it the recording jumps from 55 mins to 1h55mins. If I don't pause it and just let it play it is ok. Anyone else had a similar problem?

Is this only on one specific recording, or on anything that's longer than 1hr 55mins.

Can you post a video of this happening?

  • It's happening on several recordings, it seems to be worse on longer recordings. It's on different channels. I mainly record the +1 SD channels as they take up less space and so that I can fast forward the adverts.

Instinctively I'd think this sounds HDD-related, but I'm surprised the behaviour is so specific.

Try the same test on some HD channels - with MP4 encoding, 1Tb storage goes quite a way. Do you get the same issue?

  • I do record for 30 min on BBC1 hd, only have problem occasionally on that. What is MP4 encoding?

MP4 is a file format. In the same way as word documents can be .doc or .docx, images can be .img, .jpg, .gif or a few others... VM used to use MPEG2 for video encoding. This was changed to MPEG4 quite a few years back, with the end result being a "new" HD recording uses roughly the same amount of disk-space as an "old" SD recording did.
