Catch Up gone from TV guide

I don't use it very often but I've noticed that, with the exception of just a few channels such as C5, the ability to play something from catch up has disappeared from the TV guide on my 'V6 not upgraded to 360' box. The C symbol has gone from pretty much anything, past present & future on the guide.

Is this something VM have done away with or would it be a fault on my box or a local error on the system? The service status page says I have no faults.

Thanks!

I don't think you meant Explore .. it's Discover isn't it? So when did you discover the icons wouldn't be coming back? ... four weeks ago you thought they would be.

No, I meant "Explore". In TiVo-parlance, "Discover" usually means the discovery bar at the top of the homescreen - where either 4 or 6 tile adverts are used to highlight certain content.

At the time of my previous posting, I did indeed believe the icons would be returning - I have since been made aware of some technical changes, such that the workaround now needs to be used on any app-based channel. The CatchUp flag still works for linking to VM's in-house VoD system - which currently applies to C5, Sky, and the "UKTV" (branded as U&) suite amongst others.

OK thanks ... I see where Explore is now and it does save entering stuff in Search and Discover ... still a bit off not to alert people, including their own support staff it appears, about a change to what I think is a very useful piece of functionality. It's not just the ease of accessing it ... if the icon is there you usually know the programme is available.

Yes, I first noticed this at the beginning of December 2024 and as per your conversation with #japitts here, it's certainly not coming back. The only comms I get from Virgin Media is the annual mega price increase, so I'm not surprised they don't keep customers informed of things, as a communications company they're useless at communicating with their customers except when they want more money. I can understand why that system has gone off of the EPG now that broadcasters push things through their flaming apps making the process of playing something though catchup a very long winded affair - your last post highlighted the main failure of the current system which is the loss of an icon against anything that is available, it's now pot luck after going though Discover, into the app to try to find if it exists on there, which often turns out to be  waste of time as it doesn't. I now don't really bother with catch-up at all, I make sure I record anything I'm likely to watch and also find it easier to download stuff from the internet as mkv files, especially the current US shows, and play them off  a hard drive through the TV's video player, giving the VM system a total swerve.

An absolutely correct approach, and it always has been. OnDemand & CatchUp is a good insurance policy, but anything you think you might want to watch, should be recorded as a matter of course.

Your box's hard drive will always be a better option than anything internet-based. Also, using the "search & explore" method also means you can quickly check for repeat showings (thus recordable) of something you've missed. Or create a VoD bookmark shortcut.

  • I apologise for contacting you on this thread but my question relates to catch up and I did not get an answer on an online chat with a VM agent.

i have a TiVo V6 box and I have noticed that on the channel listing menu certain channels like BBC and itv no longer show with the @ like character ( it has a c instead of the a) if a programme is on catchup . I find this really difficult because I don’t want to waste disc space on the box recording it when it is going to be on catchup neither do I not want to record a show to find it is not on catchup and therefore miss something I really want to watch. Has it changed recently , can it be restored thanks for any help

      Kneelc

It's often better to start a new thread if you're not sure, than add to an old one.

In this case, the question you have was discussed more recently - I've moved your post to that thread, reading the history of this should answer your query.

Feel free to use the reply function here, if necessary.

Just to say I keep finding it annoying that this functionality is missing (and no, going through several menus isn't a "workaround"). The 'C' icon patched through to iPlayer etc. until recently, so I don't understand why having separate streaming apps should be a blocker now. Perhaps the Virgin engineers could show some ingenuity and get it working again.

You are unlikely to get the functionality back. The catch-up linkthrough was designed to access  VMs own catch-up servers, which used to hold all the content from the PSB channels (BBC channels, ITV, Channel 4 & Channel 5). This then operated through a broadcast playout system that just sent the programme to your local cabinet & not to any others. All OD has moved to the internet now, with catch-up moving to dedicated apps run by the PSB channels themselves. Also most of these apps now require an account that you must login to in order to see the content. All this has made the link more or less redundant.

PS. To get to the iPlayer from a BBC channel directly, just press the Red Button & you can restart the existing programme or choose to access the iPlayer for other content.
